It was about 2 years ago that i stumbled across Tommy Wilson’s (aka Milyoo) productions and I have been a fan ever since. Since then i have seen him garner support from the like of Sinden on KISS FM, Mary Anne Hobbes and Gilles Peterson. Blogs all over the place have embraced and championed his sound and he has had releases on Opit, WNLC and Saigon. Now he releases a 10 track album on CD and digital for Opit and it pretty much just reaffirms all the hype.
Describing his music is a complex conundrum, it’s not that easy to find other producers to compare him to as is generally the lazy way to get any point across…at times it’s actually hard to figure out what the influences and inspirations behind tracks might be. Lets just say that Milyoo makes music inspired by music. There is never a set vibe nor direction, no real sign posts and certainly no Sherpa. Listening the album is a journey and Milyoo is in the drivers seat.
I guess if i had to pin down the immense totality of his sonic output into just a couple of words I would venture that what Milyoo does is create something that shares roughly the same DNA as House music, but has been so twisted and mutated by exposure to things like Hip-Hop, Bass Music and even classic Pop that it’s the rough equivalent of comparing a head of lettuce to a human (there is a roughly 16% percent genetic similarity between the two oddly enough).
He will build a track from the oddest of things, like the odd rattling bounce which opens “Dasein” which subtly morphs to a vital part of the beat when the tune drops. The synth work is traditionally compossed of complex layers that flow around each other, built on aggressive changing of interest level in the melodic movements. Beatwork alternates between driving pounding rythms and incredible disjointed percussive work.
The only real connection between his tracks is that generally if you drop one in your set it will light up the dance floor. A good experiment would be to drop “Tough Enough” mid set and watch as the couples in the club suddenly start moving closer together…it’s just that kind of tune.
“Windows to Love” is incredibly hectic, almost dark and surreal until 2 mins in when the vocal cuts drop in and the beat switches up the effective equivalent of Phil Collins on acid. That shouldn’t be a compliment but it really, really is.
All in all, this guy from Kentucky has managed to come up with music that is as genre blending and inventive as anything that is coming out of the UK scene and this album is very much worth investing in. It’s really the last chance you will get to jump on the Milyoo bandwagon before his rise switches gears from swift to meteoric.
